Naturalization process

A foreign person can obtain the Mexican Nationality through a process called naturalization. The following are the different reasons and requirements:

A)  Naturalization certificate for having resided continuously in Mexico for five years:

This certificate is issued to foreigners who can demonstrate that they have been living legally in Mexico for at least the five years immediately prior to the date of their naturalization application.

B)  Naturalization certificate (for direct descendents of Mexicans by birth):

This document is issued to foreigners who can demonstrate that they are direct descendents of a Mexican by birth and can also demonstrate that they have been living in Mexico for the two years immediately prior to the date of their application.

C)   Naturalization certificate for individuals with children who are Mexican by birth:

This certificate is issued to foreigners who can demonstrate that they have children who are Mexican by birth and that they have been living in Mexico for the two years immediately prior to the date of their naturalization application.

D) Naturalization certificate for citizens of Latin American countries and the Iberian peninsula:

This document is issued to foreigners who can demonstrate citizenship of a Latin American country or the Iberian peninsula and residency in Mexico for the two years immediately prior to the date of the application for naturalization.

E) Naturalization certificate for having made an outstanding contribution to Mexico:

This certificate is issued to foreigners who can demonstrate that they have made an outstanding cultural, social, scientific, technical, artistic, sports- or business-related contribution to Mexico that benefits the nation and who can demonstrate that they have been living in Mexico for the two years immediately prior to the date of their naturalization application.

F) Naturalization certificate (through marriage):

This document is issued to foreigners who have married a Mexican citizen and who can demonstrate that they have been living with their spouse in Mexico for the two years immediately prior to the date of the application for naturalization.

G) Naturalization certificate for foreign adopted children or foreign children descended from Mexicans (up to two generations) in the custody of a Mexican:

This document is issued to foreign children who can demonstrate that they are the adopted children or descendents (up to two generations) of Mexicans in the custody of Mexicans and who can demonstrate that they have been living in Mexico for one uninterrupted year immediately prior to the date of the application for naturalization.
